Angela has lived in Malawi since 2015, first as a PeaceCorps volunteer, and then as founder of Mustard Seed Malawi, a nonprofit organization for early childhood development in rural villages, and finally with AHA. Before coming to Malawi, Angela worked on a hospital ship coordinating surgery for patients along the coast of West Africa. Angela joined the AHA team in 2018 and immediately began coordinating MediServ trips with international medical teams, a scholarship program, a medication donation program, and a medical sponsorship program, among other duties. Since that time, she has facilitated the expansion of the surgical program to include ongoing surgical and training activities at the rural hospital with local experts from Lilongwe. She has also facilitated the improvement of hospital infrastructure at the rural community hospital through the DHO (District Health Office) and AHA’s partnership with WAM (World Altering Medicine). Angela helped conduct a Needs Assessment of Kabudula Community Hospital and its catchment area, which identified specific gaps that AHA is now addressing in the referral system, human resources, pharmaceutical supply, and infrastructure. Based on the needs assessment, Angela led the expansion of AHA’s medical sponsorship program to include direct support for patients referred from the community hospital to more urban health facilities, more targeted support for MediServ, and other departments at Kabudula Community Hospital. Angela’s current work includes expanding AHA’s partnership with Kamuzu Central Hospital to include a residency exchange program and provide support for the backlog of surgical cases postponed due to COVID-19.
