Under the Baobab Tree

November 30, 2021 Karen Clark

Greetings!

The AHA team is working hard to provide quality healthcare despite the ongoing pandemic. We continue to facilitate surgical camps, host trainings, provide supplies to partner hospitals, and have expanded our partner networks to share ideas and resources.

COVID has significantly impacted the way AHA operates by limiting our surgical trips to Malawi. We are still operating and supporting local Malawian hospitals, and we will not be deterred. Now more than ever, we need your financial support to keep our lifesaving and life changing programs running!

In this holiday season, we are so grateful for our supporters, partners, donors, patients, and community. Zikomo! (Thank you!)

PATIENT SPOTLIGHT: Damalesi

Fifty-three year old Damalesi has suffered from a goiter since 1981. Imagine living 40 years with a large lump on your throat, feeling great pain when walking and doing household chores.

Facing excessive pain, Damalesi first tried to seek treatment in 1992. She went to Nkhoma Hospital twice, was given an injection and pills for three months, and was told to wait another four years before getting treatment. But nothing changed. Until now.

Damalesi was in disbelief when she received a call inviting her to visit Kabudula Community Hospital where she could receive treatment from AHA. Damalesi lives just a 20 minute minibus ride from Kab, and came to our October screening camp (in picture, Damalesi talks to AHA volunteer Jacleen).

Now, Damalesi is very happy to receive an operation because she believes it will greatly ease her pain during day to day activities.

Damalesi reported that AHA’s surgical program is helping many people in her community and believes the condition of goiters should be given more attention in Malawi.

IMPACT: Adolescent Leadership Training

While many nonprofits shut down operations in response to the global pandemic, AHA remained committed to providing high quality trainings in safe environments. During 2021, AHA’s Country Director, Mr. Solomon Chipingo-Phiri, led six Adolescent Leadership Trainings for those involved in HIV programming in various regions across Malawi.

Successes as reported by Chipingo:

  • Role-playing on critical topics

  • Active participation by all attendees

  • Availability of senior officials from hosting organizations

  • Increased number of trained facilitators for future programming

  • Coverage of all regions of Malawi
