Surgical Camps
Bridging the Gap
AHA has longstanding relationships with three public hospitals in Malawi: Kamuzu Central Hospital, Kabudula Community Hospital, and Mitundu Community Hospitals. During surgical camps, AHA brings resources, medical experts, and trainings to our partners.
BENEFICIARIES
Patients from each hospital’s catchment area have access to specialized and nearby care.
Local providers improve their skill and learn new techniques from hands-on experience and trainings.
Providers increase their capacity to more effectively serve the surrounding population.
Visiting surgeons and practitioners gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by colleagues working in remote areas as well as the greater needs of the rural population.
IMPACT
Local surgical camps complete an average of 50-100 surgeries in a week!

Building Capacity
In addition to receiving individualized coaching from visiting surgeons, staff receive hands-on training to build their capacity and expand the procedures that can be performed on-site. Past trainings have included building surgical sets, operating room set ups, sterilization, and more.
Identifying Referrals
Sometimes, a patient attends a surgical camps and we cannot treat them due to lack of appropriate equipment, specialization, or resources. We refer these patients to the appropriate facility to receive additional imaging, diagnosis, treatment, and follow up care. In some cases, we provide Medical Sponsorship to cover all costs related to their treatment.
